Red Squirrel Week for Home Educators at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary

Learn • Explore • Discover: Red Squirrel Week Home Ed Session at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary

Celebrate one of the Isle of Wight’s greatest environmental success stories with Red Squirrel Week, part of the Learning & Discovery series for home-educating families at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary in Sandown.

While native red squirrels are sadly extinct across most of England and Wales, our Island remains a vital stronghold where they continue to thrive thanks to active human protection and habitat stewardship. This hands-on, 90-minute workshop invites young learners to explore local mammal ecology, uncover why the Island provides such a unique refuge, and investigate how positive human conservation keeps this iconic species safe.

Why Home Educating Families Will Value It

  • Local Ecology & Biodiversity: A deep dive into native UK wildlife, examining the biology, woodland habitats, and seasonal behaviours of our resident red squirrels.

  • Positive Conservation in Action: Demonstrates the impact of human intervention, habitat preservation, and island biosecurity in protecting vulnerable species.

  • Hands-On Learning & Discovery: Combines interactive activities, wildlife discussions, and guided learning led by the sanctuary's education team.

  • Full-Day Sanctuary Entry Included: Make a full day of it—every child ticket includes complete access to explore the rescue habitats, clifftop views, and play areas before or after your workshop.

Exploring Wightrider: A Heritage Bus Weekend for Home Educating Families

Running on the 10th and 11th October

Organised by the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum, the annual Wightrider weekend turns the Island's roads into a living history museum. It offers a brilliant, hands-on opportunity for families to step back in time, experience vintage public transport in action, and explore local geography from the upper deck of a classic bus.

Why It’s a Fantastic Learning Trip

  • Living History in Motion: Rather than just looking at exhibits behind ropes, children get to ride on a wide variety of preserved vintage buses and coaches operated by the museum and private owners.

  • Engineering, Transport & Design: Perfect for learners curious about mechanics, design history, and how travel on the Island has evolved over the past century.

  • Budget-Friendly Field Trip: Travel on all numbered heritage bus services across the weekend is completely free of charge (offered on a first-come, first-served basis). Official programmes are sold to support museum upkeep and bus restorations.

Make a Day of It: The Bus & Coach Museum

The operational hub of the event is based around the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum at the former Southern Vectis depot on Park Road in Ryde. Between rides, families can explore around 20 historic vehicles, transport artefacts, archive photographs, and grab refreshments at the on-site tea bar.

  • Cost & Ticketing:

    • Free entry to the Havenstreet Station site, yard, café, and workshop tours.

    • Train Rides: Kids Go Free! Up to 3 children travel free with every full-paying adult train ticket (tickets bookable online or on the day at the booking office).

  • Getting There: Easy public transport via the Route 33 Southern Vectis bus, connecting directly from Ryde and Newport right to Havenstreet Station.

  • About the Weekend: A lively, hands-on celebration of the "unsung heroes" of the railway—the vintage diesel shunters. Families can watch these small but mighty engines in action sorting carriages, enjoy brake van rides, climb up into the locomotive cabs to see the controls, and explore the engineering workshops on behind-the-scenes tours.

  • Why It’s Brilliant for Learners: Getting right up into the engine cabs and exploring active workshops turns mechanical history into a vibrant, multi-sensory adventure. Children develop real curiosity about engineering, motion, and social history by discovering how these workhorse locomotives helped keep goods moving across the country, sparking imaginative play and practical STEM thinking.

Bring the history alive with our Isle & Rhyme: Brading Roman Villa rhyming story and companion educational pack! Tailored specifically to ignite curiosity and support cross-curricular learning, it blends engaging place-based storytelling with activities covering Roman daily life, mosaic craft, local archaeology, and creative literacy—ideal for home educators and young explorers.

Discover an inspiring reflection on memory, identity, and history with the Journaling Life exhibition at Brading Roman Villa. Settle in for an evening of autumn cinema as Wes Anderson’s witty, visually stunning stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox comes to the screen at Department in Ryde.

Journaling Life Exhibition at Brading Roman Villa

Journaling Life: Free Creative Community Exhibition at Brading Roman Villa

Extend Your Learning: The Isle & Rhyme Brading Roman Villa Pack Planning a visit to explore the mosaics and exhibition? Bring the history alive with our Isle & Rhyme: Brading Roman Villa rhyming story and companion educational pack! Tailored specifically to ignite curiosity and support cross-curricular learning, it blends engaging place-based storytelling with activities covering Roman daily life, mosaic craft, local archaeology, and creative literacy—ideal for home educators and young explorers.

Discover an inspiring reflection on memory, identity, and history with the Journaling Life exhibition at Brading Roman Villa. Hosted as part of Can You Hear Us?—a six-week cultural celebration spanning the Isle of Wight—this special community installation bridges the ancient past with our lives today.

Led by artist Lucy Bell, participants examined the Villa’s historic collection for subtle traces left behind by the Romans who lived and worked here—such as a maker’s handprint preserved forever in a clay floor tile. Drawing inspiration from these personal marks, contributors crafted their own tangible legacies and identity markers using clay handprints, expressive "junk drawer" assemblages, and personal keepsakes, prompting every visitor to ponder the timeless question: "What is my legacy?"

Why Families & Learners Will Value It

  • Humanising History: Connects archaeological finds with modern human stories, showing learners how everyday people leave meaningful imprints across centuries.

  • Tactile, Creative Storytelling: Showcases mixed-media artworks, personal object curation, and clay work created by local community members.

  • Wider Cultural Festival: Connects to the Island-wide Can You Hear Us? programme celebrating local voices, artists, and heritage.
