Skara Brae

Script:

Around five thousand years ago a wandering tribe had found

A place to build a quiet life upon some fertile ground.

Away up north in Orkney, where the chilly waters roar,

They traded in their roving tents to settle by the shore.

With very little wood around, they found another way:

They built their homes of layered stone that still survive today!

Packed deep beneath a rubbish heap of ash and bone and shell,

The village stayed quite warm and snug and kept the storms out well.

Inside each cosy little house were shelves to show their gear,

With stone-built beds and cooking hearths to make them feel much cheer.

They made their needles out of bone and crafted pots of clay,

And farmed the crops and reared their beasts while working through the day.

Then after many centuries the people packed and fled;

Did sand dunes chase them from the coast, or climate change instead?

The village lay beneath the sand, deserted, lost and deep,

Until a vicious storm tore loose the houses from their sleep!
